So were heading north along the jersey shore towards NYC when we pass the exit to Seaside Heights and I couldn’t help myself and I got off.
Seaside Heights means a lot to me. i had a lot of great memories there from my late teens and early 20s. The town got wrecked in Hurricane Sandy. The two amusement park Boardwalk both had major collapses into the ocean and the Boardwalk got completely torn up in parts. A lot of the boardwalk amusements were trashed. A lot of the images went national in the aftermath especially the image of the StarJet roller coaster than collapsed into the ocean and sat there mostly intact. I really wanted to see how the reconstruction efforts were coming along. So we drove into town and parked and walked to the beach
to my surprise, the coaster was still in the water! The hurricane hit towards the end of October 2012 and it was now mid March 2013 and it was still there!
here is what’s left of the pier. the end collapsed into the sea and this coaster free fell into the water
The boardwalk is completely missing in this area
The boardwalk in this area is being rebuilt already
The second pier, Funtown Pier, suffered as extensive damage. It too lost a roller coaster to the sea. But that one has already been removed from the ocean and discarded
Even the Ferris Wheel half collapsed into the sea
More boardwalk rebuilding
The ocean is gorgeous can be incredibly destructive. =(
There is no way that Seaside will be ready in time for this summer despite all the press conferences they are having. The boardwalk may be finished the piers wont be up in time.
Then we finally crossed the George Washington Bridge home
That was our 5 day road trip. Its the kind of thing I live for, i just hope i have more available money next trip. But we make due with what we have. =)
